Healthy Habits Tip Series – Week 6 Don’t Skip Meals

Healthy eating habits are extremely important but what does this really mean? We think it’s a lifestyle where you make a time-tested commitment to balance, variety and moderation.

Simply said: it is an everyday commitment to eating a variety of foods from different food groups without getting too many calories or too much of one nutrient.

So, where do you start?
We all know that old habits are hard to break, so start slow. Be realistic with your expectations and make one change a week, rather than trying to change everything at once. Try adopting one nutrition tip a week and incorporate it into your busy lifestyle. Within 2-3 months you will develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime…..more energy, better health and beautiful skin are just some of the benefits.

Don’t Skip Meals

Waiting more than four or five hours between meals causes your blood sugar to bottom out, leaving you weak, irritable and tired. Try to eat three balanced meals and two snacks per day. Include a protein source in every meal and snack.

Avoid reaching for refined sugars when you starving, so no candy bars. Sorry. What you do is telling your body to create a burst of insulin to metabolize the sugar. Unstable and high insulin levels can cause problems like diabetes type 2. By cutting refined sugar you in your diet your body slows the production of insulin to healthier levels. Try a baked apple instead.

Good snack idea: a handful or blueberries mixed with almonds or walnuts. This is a great source of antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 and protein with low sugar content.

Portion Control

Over the years, our perception of a normal portion has grown considerably and as a result so has our waistline. Your meal portions should leave you satisfied, but not feeling stuffed. Your body takes 20 minutes to tell your brain that it is full, so eat slowly. Share a meal with your family or friends if possible. Enjoy a good conversation and quality time. Turn off your TV and take a walk after your meal.

Help with Healthy Holiday Eating with Caryn Laviv of Calorie Inc.

As a child there were two important parts to Halloween: the costume and the pillowcase. The pillowcase was particularly important because I wanted to ensure that I had maximum capacity for all my Halloween candy. Each year there was a competition between me and my brother to see who could get the most candy. There was so much candy between the two of us that it would last for a few months (my brother and I were very good at rationing). I did, however, often catch my parents helping themselves to our stockpile. Whoever said “kids will be kids” should’ve said “adults will be kids!”

As an adult I see how scary the holidays can be for dieters. Month after month from October to January, parties and excessive food can challenge your good intentions and your good habits. But there are ways to avoid or limit weight gain during this time.

It would be easy to say “reduce sweets and alcohol, and practice portion control, all while maintaining your exercise routine.” But let’s be real. If those behaviors aren’t followed during the year, why would they be followed in the midst of the most celebratory and food-focused time of the year?

I’m a big believer in small steps. Small positive steps, when compounded over time, lead to wonderful results. What small step can you make with your food that will get you to January 1 feeling proud and accomplished? Remember a small step isn’t “lose 10 pounds.” That is a goal. A step is an action.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Replace one alcoholic beverage with a glass of water or sparkling water each time you go out
• Bring your lunch to work twice per week
• Replace two lattes per week with tea or regular coffee
• Try one new vegetable per week

Notice how all of these ideas are relatively easy and painless? They will, however, make a big difference, and they will inspire you to make more small steps.

Make it a game. Have fun. What one small step can you make?

Eat more fiber

High-fiber foods make you feel fuller, take longer to digest and cause a slow, gradual rise in blood sugar. Choose a piece of whole fruit over juice, whole-grain bread instead of white, high-fiber cereal instead of refined sugared cereal. Try to consume at least 20-30 ounces a day. Fiber will also help with lowering your cholesterol levels and regulating bowel movements.

Drink water:
Water will help you to lose weight because it flushes out the waste products your body makes when it breaks down fat for energy or processes protein. Drink at 8-10 glasses of water a day. Use recyclable, environment friendly water containers, glass containers are recommended.

2. Eat breakfast every day

Don’t skip breakfast.

Not only does it jump start your metabolism, it also gives you the energy you need to get through the day. Researchers at Harvard University found that those who ate breakfast every day were 44 per cent less likely to be overweight. Make sure that your breakfast includes fiber and protein. For example: double fiber whole wheat English muffin (8 onz of fiber) and a hard boiled egg.

Week#1

Balance your meals

Eat lean protein, nutrient-rich carbohydrates (whole grains, fruits and vegetables) and non-saturated fats at every meal. The protein helps build and repair muscle; the carbohydrates replenish energy stores without elevating blood sugar; and healthy fats assure your body that there’s more fuel coming in, giving it the OK to burn stored fat.  Try to eat your dinner before 6PM.

Properly Cleansed Skin Improves the Appearance and Health of Your Skin

July 27, 2011 by

Cleansing the skin is essential, since grease, grime and pollution adhere to your skin and clog the pores, every time your body rids itself of toxins through perspiration.

If you do not thoroughly cleanse your skin, it will look ruddy and un-healthy and can result in minor skin irritations and problems.  Your skin type is determined by your age, sex, genes and environment. How you take care of your skin will show on your hands, face and body. It is never too late or too early to start caring for your skin – to accomplish that glow that enhances your beauty.

Here Are Tips For Choosing The Correct Cleanser For Your Skin:

- Shiny and oily skin that is susceptible to pimples and other blemishes should be cleansed by using a “foaming wash”: this offers a clean after using and will not strip your skin of its natural, beneficial oils.

- Dry skin, with a tight feeling, no shine and no open pores, should be cleansed with“cleansing milk” which is formulated for dry skin. Dry skin needs a gentle cleansing formula that will add moisture and replace lost oil in the skin that is replenished by most cleansing milks.

- Combination skin refers to skin having an oily “T zone”, meaning the forehead, mouth, chin and nose. This area of the skin normally has large and open pores and the cheeks are generally normal or dry. Use a cleansing gel to clean your face as will cleanse your skin gently and will not leave your skin harsh and dry after cleansing.

- Mature skin or skin that which is losing its “elasticity”. With this type of skin, facial lines will be apparent on the skin’s surface the skin tends to be very dry. A vitamin “E” rich “cleansing milk” will be perfect for this skin type, it provides nourishment for your skin.

Facial Peels, Scrubs And Exfoliants;

Scrubs and exfoliants are generally formulated with a creamy base that contains fine grainy elements. The finer grains, the more efficient it is in exfoliating the face as it lifts out dirt particles that clog the pores.

Dermatologists recommend using peels, exfoliant and scrubs once a week to deeply clean the pores.

Fine granule exfoliants are gentler on the face than those with larger granules that can irritate or scratch your skin. Peels are generally applied and left on the face to dry for approximately 15 minutes or so before peeling them off. Choose mild peels to avoid irritation.

When problems arise during the use of these products, stop their use and immediately consult a dermatologist.

Rev Up Your Skin with a Dermalogica Microdermabrasion Treatment at Facelogic Redmond

July 20, 2011 by

The human skin produces about one million skin cells every 40 minutes! As skin cells are produced from the deepest layer and move towards the surface, older cells harden, lose moisture, and detach from skin. This process is called desquamation, and it helps eliminates damaged, contaminated cells that carry environmental pollutants.

As we age, desquamation slows, and can cause skin dullness, follicle clogging, and dryness. Through exfoliation, dulling skin cells are effectively removed and newer cells are revealed for a fresher, healthier appearance. Exfoliation is critical for all skin conditions. Dermalogica recommends pairing one day of intense exfoliation with a week of gentle exfoliation to more effectively stimulate cell renewal rates, reduce signs of premature aging, improve skin texture and brighten.

Our Dermalogica microdermabrasion treatments have many beneficial effects. With the stratum corneum gone, the skin’s surface is improved. The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin’s visible imperfections, like sun damage, blemishes and fine lines, are removed. Also, without the stratum corneum acting as a barrier, medicinal creams and lotions are more effective because more of their active ingredients and moisture can find their way down to the lower layers of skin.

A non-invasive exfoliation treatment which helps to repair the skin, by reducing the appearance of acne scars, cleaning clogged pores, and restoring a healthier smoother skin while helping to fight signs of aging and hyperpigmentation. Give us a call today to book your appointment, we will start off with a facemapping process to assess your skin and then we will get you started on your skin renewal process with our  Microdermabrasion Treatment
