Healthy eating habits are extremely important but what does this really mean? We think it’s a lifestyle where you make a time-tested commitment to balance, variety and moderation.

Simply said: it is an everyday commitment to eating a variety of foods from different food groups without getting too many calories or too much of one nutrient.

So, where do you start?
We all know that old habits are hard to break, so start slow. Be realistic with your expectations and make one change a week, rather than trying to change everything at once. Try adopting one nutrition tip a week and incorporate it into your busy lifestyle. Within 2-3 months you will develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime…..more energy, better health and beautiful skin are just some of the benefits.

Dine Out Less

Huge portions high in fat and calories makes it hard to eat well when dining out. When you do eat out, avoid fried foods, heavy sauces and dressings, and skip fillers like bread baskets. Most restaurants have now a “healthy choice” on the menu. Ordering a mini portion or sharing your plate is also a good option. Facelogic skin care spa healthy habits tips series dine out less

Try adopting one nutrition tip a week and incorporate it into your busy lifestyle. Within 2-3 months you will develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime…..more energy, better health and beautiful skin are just some of the benefits.

Don’t Skip Meals

Waiting more than four or five hours between meals causes your blood sugar to bottom out, leaving you weak, irritable and tired. Try to eat three balanced meals and two snacks per day. Include a protein source in every meal and snack.

Avoid reaching for refined sugars when you starving, so no candy bars. Sorry. What you do is telling your body to create a burst of insulin to metabolize the sugar. Unstable and high insulin levels can cause problems like diabetes type 2. By cutting refined sugar you in your diet your body slows the production of insulin to healthier levels. Try a baked apple instead.

Good snack idea: a handful or blueberries mixed with almonds or walnuts. This is a great source of antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 and protein with low sugar content.

Portion Control

Over the years, our perception of a normal portion has grown considerably and as a result so has our waistline. Your meal portions should leave you satisfied, but not feeling stuffed. Your body takes 20 minutes to tell your brain that it is full, so eat slowly. Share a meal with your family or friends if possible. Enjoy a good conversation and quality time. Turn off your TV and take a walk after your meal.

Help with Healthy Holiday Eating with Caryn Laviv of Calorie Inc.

As a child there were two important parts to Halloween: the costume and the pillowcase. The pillowcase was particularly important because I wanted to ensure that I had maximum capacity for all my Halloween candy. Each year there was a competition between me and my brother to see who could get the most candy. There was so much candy between the two of us that it would last for a few months (my brother and I were very good at rationing). I did, however, often catch my parents helping themselves to our stockpile. Whoever said “kids will be kids” should’ve said “adults will be kids!”

As an adult I see how scary the holidays can be for dieters. Month after month from October to January, parties and excessive food can challenge your good intentions and your good habits. But there are ways to avoid or limit weight gain during this time.

It would be easy to say “reduce sweets and alcohol, and practice portion control, all while maintaining your exercise routine.” But let’s be real. If those behaviors aren’t followed during the year, why would they be followed in the midst of the most celebratory and food-focused time of the year?

I’m a big believer in small steps. Small positive steps, when compounded over time, lead to wonderful results. What small step can you make with your food that will get you to January 1 feeling proud and accomplished? Remember a small step isn’t “lose 10 pounds.” That is a goal. A step is an action.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Replace one alcoholic beverage with a glass of water or sparkling water each time you go out
• Bring your lunch to work twice per week
• Replace two lattes per week with tea or regular coffee
• Try one new vegetable per week

Notice how all of these ideas are relatively easy and painless? They will, however, make a big difference, and they will inspire you to make more small steps.

Make it a game. Have fun. What one small step can you make?

Eat more fiber

High-fiber foods make you feel fuller, take longer to digest and cause a slow, gradual rise in blood sugar. Choose a piece of whole fruit over juice, whole-grain bread instead of white, high-fiber cereal instead of refined sugared cereal. Try to consume at least 20-30 ounces a day. Fiber will also help with lowering your cholesterol levels and regulating bowel movements.

Drink water:
Water will help you to lose weight because it flushes out the waste products your body makes when it breaks down fat for energy or processes protein. Drink at 8-10 glasses of water a day. Use recyclable, environment friendly water containers, glass containers are recommended.

2. Eat breakfast every day

Don’t skip breakfast.

Not only does it jump start your metabolism, it also gives you the energy you need to get through the day. Researchers at Harvard University found that those who ate breakfast every day were 44 per cent less likely to be overweight. Make sure that your breakfast includes fiber and protein. For example: double fiber whole wheat English muffin (8 onz of fiber) and a hard boiled egg.
