The Hideous Truth of Indoor Tanning

The Hideous Truth of Indoor Tanning

A major scientific report has just announced that indoor tanning devices are “definitely carcinogenic”; meaning that tanning beds WILL cause cancer. It has been proven that if you start your skin-cooking habit before the age of 30, your risk of developing melanoma increases by 75%.

We are here to bust some of these skin-baking myths:

Myth 1: To get the vitamin D you need, some fake & bake time is required.

  • False, you can get enough Vitamin D your body requires by being outside with sunscreen for 5 to 15 minutes per week, taking vitamin supplements, or eating vitamin rich foods.

Myth 2: Melanoma can be found on parts of the body that aren’t exposed to sun, so UV light is not the sole cause of melanoma.

  • False, there is 50 years of research that proves there is a strong correlation between sun exposure and all forms of skin cancer.

Myth 3: A base tan will protect you from sun damage.

  • False, any color that your skin has means skin damage has already occurred. When outside, always slather on that SPF for beneficial sun protection.

So, why pay for cancer in a box when the (approximately) $40 you spend per month on your fake & bake you could have bought one of these…

            – 4 manicures

            – 13 lattes

            – 40 songs downloaded to your iPod

            – the 1st round at happy hour for you and your friends

-an Express Signature Facial at Facelogic Redmond to keep your skin healthy and

Beat that Mean Melanoma

Beat that Mean Melanoma

May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection & Awareness Month. According to Westchester Health Associates, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable. The incidence of skin cancer has reached preposterous levels: there has been a 300% increase in non-melanoma skin cancer since 1994 & 90% of it is associated with exposure to UV radiation. Furthermore, 1 in 5 Americans will have skin cancer at one point in their lives.

Stuart Zweibel, MD, PHD, from Westchester Health Associates states, “A tan is actually your body’s attempt to protect itself from the sun’s harmful rays and is a symptom of the sun damage that is occurring beneath the surface of the skin.”

In order to protect your skin from these unwanted rays, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Make sure you apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors. The ingredients in the sunscreen need time to bind to your skin to be effective. If at all possible, avoid the mid-day sun, especially the hours between 10 AM to 4 PM, when the sun is the strongest and can do the most damage.

Know the warning signs of skin cancer. A skin growth that changes in size and appears pearly, translucent, brown, black, tan or multicolored, a mole or birthmark that changes color or texture or increases in thickness, is irregular in outline and larger than the head of an eraser.

Deep Breathing Gives You a Healthy Glow — and More!

You’re breathing. But are you breathing well?

If the answer is yes, you’re enhancing your health, lowering your blood pressure, reducing your stress and giving your complexion a healthy, rosy glow.

Unfortunately, lots of people don’t breath properly. And when we’re under stress – which is often  — we tend to breathe more shallowly and may even hold our breath. This depletes our heart, brain and other organs of life-giving oxygen.

The solution? Simply practice deep breathing. Here’s how:

1. Sit comfortably with your shoulders relaxed.

2. Inhale through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise rather than pulling your shoulders upward. This allows a fuller, more natural breath. Count to five as you inhale.

3. Now, exhale through your nose, again counting to five. Fell your lungs deflate, pushing out what is now stale carbon dioxide. Pause for two seconds at the end of your exhalation, and begin again for a fresh breath of air.

Repeat 5-10 times to feel better and be healthier. Couldn’t be easier!

Sun can give you more than wrinkles – it can give you cancer.

In honor of Melanoma Awareness Month, this is our second post about skin cancer and how you can avoid getting it. Turns out it’s the most common kind of cancer in the U.S., yet it’s also easy to see and curable if caught early.

Stay safe as you head into summer. Here’s how:

1. Avoid the sun.

Exposure to the sun is the biggest environmental factor when it comes to skin cancer. So – stay out of it! Be especially carefully to avoid the sun during midday (10 am – 4 pm) when the UV rays are the strongest.

2. Wear sunscreen every day.

Wear a moisturizer and/or foundation with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Don’t stop there, though: slather sunscreen on any part of your body not covered by clothing—don’t forget your ears, the back of your neck or your hands. Repeat throughout the day.

3. Wear a hat and sunglasses.

Besides looking cool, you’ll shield yourself from damage with these two sun-blocking accessories.

With the hat, go for a wide brim to shade as much of your face as possible. Sunglasses should block both ultraviolet-A (UVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays.

4. Try a self-tanner.

Give yourself a beautiful bronzed glow with self-tanners. Not sure which one to use? Check out this handy review of self-tanners.

Summer vacation. Playing at the beach. Backyard barbeques.

Ah, the lazy day of summer. Love them! But along with sunny days come risks to your skin – and your life.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month

An annual event sponsored by the American Association of Dermatology, it focuses attention on the dangers of skin cancer and what you can do to prevent getting it.

Today, I’m throwing a pop quiz to test your sun savvy. In another post, I’ll give you tips on how you can enjoy your sunshine – safely.

What’s your sun savvy?

1. The only safe tan:
a) occurs after 2 pm
b) comes from a bottle
c) can be obtained from the winter sun

2. UVB is:
a) an ingredient in sun protection products
 b) the type of sun ray responsible for frying your hide
c) the term dermatologists use when you are diagnosed with skin cancer

3. Melanoma is:
a) the scientific term for sunburn
b) the most dangerous form of skin cancer
c) a cluster of freckles

4. 80% of the sun exposure you during your lifetime occurs:
a) after you turn 21
b) before the age of 18
c) after you turn 50

5. To you, a tan is:
a) what summer and vacations are all about
b) what you get when you apply a self-tanner
c) what you get at the tanning salon

6. You apply sunscreen:
a) once a day, just before hitting the beach
b) all over your body 30 minutes before heading out; repeat often
c) on your face before applying makeup

“B” is the correct answer for all questions. How did you do?

3 Ways to Drink More Water

February 26, 2009 by admin

Your massage therapist often reminds you to drink lots of water after your massage. What great advice–after an appointment, but also for every day.

Here are 3 tips to staying hydrated.

Take water with you
Drinking WaterYou’re already in the habit of taking water with you to the gym. Now, step it up and take a bottle with you every time you head out the door. This is one of the easiest, most effective ways to drink more water.

Add a splash of fruit juice to rev up the taste without adding a lot of calories or sugar. For a serious zap of flavor, try Crystal Light or Propel. Both come in single-serving packets; just dump in the powder and shake. A dash of lemon or lime juice is refreshing, too.

Try some tea
We may be the coffee capital but tea, especially herbal tea, offers great taste with the power to hydrate. Try some of Tazo’s blends like Wild Sweet Orange and Passion Iced Tea. If you’re into organic, Yogi Tea is an ideal brand with flavors like Egyptian Licorice Mint, Himalayan Apple Spice and Tahitian Vanilla Hazelnut.

Eat to hydrate
You know fruits and veggies are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Did you know they’re loaded with water, too?

  • Cucumbers  – 96% water
  • Lettuce  – 95% water
  • Watermelon – 92% water
  • Cantaloupe  – 90% water
  • Grapefruit  –  91% water

As the weather warms, visit local farmers markets to load up on fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables. You’ll stay hydrated and well-fed while supporting our local farmers. More stands will be opening up as we head into spring. Keep your eyes open!
